Ultrasonography (US)
Ultrasonography visualizes human organs by sound waves(ultrasound). The area of interests includes liver, gall bladder, bile duct, pancreas, kidneys, urinary bladder, uterus and ovaries. Ultrasonography provides accurate information indicating cirrhosis, gall stones, pancreatitis, renal stone and tumours etc. Comparing with other imaging modalities, ultrasonography is free from ionizing-radiation hazard. Hence, it is commonly used for obstetrics to monitor fetus’s growth inside the womb.
Procedures and Reminders:
- The procedure takes 20 to 30 minutes.
- For abdominal region:
- Fast for 6 to 8 hours prior to the examination. Small amount of clear fluid is allowed. - For pelvic region:
- Drink 4 to 5 cups of water prior to this examination the ensure the bladder is full for optimal view of the related organs. - Other examinations (Breast, thyroid and neck):
- No specific preparation is required.
